Things To See And Do In Buenos Aires
Full Day Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay
Buenos Aires
PRICE BAND |
Colonia del Sacramento, in Uruguay, was the only Portuguese settlement along the Rio de la Plata. Today this charming 17th Century town is a Unesco world heritage site; a cobble stoned gem just an hour fast ferry-ride across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires. This full day tour leaves Buenos Aires in the morning, sailing across the River Plate to reach Colonia where you can discover history and culture around every corner. The Puerta de la Ciudadela; the gate to the old fort, is a point of considerable historic interest and the surrounding square is very picturesque, especially in spring (September to December) when its trees are in blossom. Along the quiet Calle de los Suspiros (Sighs Street) only mules or bicycles can be seen going by and in the distance, next to the Franciscan Convent ruins, stands the lighthouse. Many ancient colonial houses along the pretty cobble stoned streets are open to the public, such as Casa Nacarello, which nowadays houses a museum and Casa del Virrey. Other interesting Museums to visit are the Portuguese Museum, the Tile Museum and the Indigenous Museum. Colonia del Sacramento has a large marina and hosts numerous regattas and boating events. Bordering the coastline, the road leads to the Real de San Carlos where the Plaza de Toros or bulls ring lies. Built in 1910, it gave place to just 8 bullfights before bullfighting was prohibited in 1912. Lunch will be served at Meson de la Plaza, a local restaurant in the old quarters of Colonia before enjoying some free time to wonder around the cobbled streets and shop for handicrafts.
